FILM REVIEW // A HERO'S JOURNEY - ARCHETYPES // CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 (2013)

'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2' (2013) the sequel to Sony Pictures Animation's 2009 film 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' is a whirlwind of colour, fun and food related puns. A reviewer from 'The Republic' has said 'It's the rare one that takes the spirit of the original and runs with it, coming up with something uniquely good in it's own right' (Goodykoontz, 2013)
It showcases the catastrophic aftermath of the events from the first movie.  This review will look at the roles that certain characters play within the film. Helen O'Hara for Empire says 'Adults will fall for the inspired silliness and secretly sincere message about loyalty at its heart' (O'Hara, 2013) It's silliness is what gives the movie its undeniable charm making for easy viewing for audiences of all ages.

The hero of the film is Flint Lockwood, the wacky scientist who's invention and eagerness to become as great a scientist as his idol Chester V has caused him to create an invention that has accidentally transformed his old island, Swallow Falls, into a land full of animal creatures each with their own personality.
Within the film, Chester V is seen as a thing of perfection a mentor (in the eyes of Flint)as an audience member we see him for who he really is from our first encounter with him. His role within the film is actually multiple roles. He is the shadow, the villain. He is also the herald, he invited Flint to join him at his 'LIVE CORP' headquarters to become a thinkquanaut and he is also the one that has the idea to send Flint back to Swallow Falls to retrieve the invention that caused the mess but his trickster persona says otherwise. He tells Flint his intentions but we know they are not true, Chester V wants the invention for his own and to rid of Flint Lockwood.
The friends of Flint are his allies they all have faith in him and will follow him to the end of the world, which almost happens in the first film, they are faithful to him and stand by his side of this wild adventure.

Flint's Father, Tim,  quite simply takes the role of the Father. Sadly there isn't a physical Mother figure in 'Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs' she is acknowledged but it seems that her character has previously passed away as shown by the sadness of both the remaining Lockwood family. Flint himself could also be deemed the child as well as the hero, due to his easy going attitude and kid-like characteristics.
Barb, the talking orangutang and assistant to Chester V has a strange persona. A shapeshifter you never quite know whether she is genuinely evil or her loyalty to Chester V has brainwashed her into being this Jekyll and Hyde-like character.

Overall 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2'  contains multiple characters all of which carrying different personas and different roles within the film which makes for fun viewing and an exciting story. It's animation is wonderfully colourful and full of life and beautifully crafted food animals. From Shrimpanzees to Watermelephants. 'Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs 2' is a must watch for lovers of animation, this isn't the case in everyone's eyes though, Brian Tallerico for Roger Ebert Reviews says 'The food doesn't just fall from the sky this time, it moves, breathes and develops its own ecosystem. The result is a film in which the environment, the "foodimals", end up more interesting that the characters or story.' (Tallrerico, 2013)
Although it's not widely though that the story is as solid as the original, the visualisation of the swamping food island holds the film together.
